Just as expected, Microsoft started the Windows 10 Mobile rollout today, thus allowing Windows Phone devices to upgrade to the new operating system after more than 12 months of beta testing as part of the Windows Insider program.

Redmond says that only some devices will get the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade at this point, but the company hasn’t provided a list of phones that are supported at this point.

UpgradeAdvisor tells if your phone is ready for the upgrade

The UpgradeAdvisor app in the Windows Store takes care of everything, so all you have to do is to download it on your phone and see if you’re eligible for the upgrade. The app works pretty much just like the Get Windows 10 app on PCs, scanning the device for compatibility issues and downloading the necessary files for the upgrade.

“This list includes a limited set of Windows Phone 8.1 devices and does not include some devices that are currently running Windows 10 Mobile in the Windows 10 Mobile Insider program,” Michael Fortin, CVP Windows and Devices Group Core Quality, said in an announcement today.

“As Windows 10 delivers significant new innovations, many older devices are not able to successfully upgrade without an impact on the customer experience. Our goal is to only offer the Windows 10 upgrade to devices that we are confident can continue to deliver a good customer experience.”

In case your device is not yet supported, it’s very important to know that this is just the very early stages of the Windows 10 Mobile rollout and the company promises to support more phones in the coming weeks and months. As previously rumored, the release takes place in stages, so more Windows Phone models will get the upgrade to the operating system.

It’s just a matter of time until this happens, but for the moment, it’s a good thing that the rollout has started after this super long and painful wait. Windows 10 Mobile is finally here!

Article was updated to state that not all Windows Phone models will get the upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile. Microsoft states “As Windows 10 delivers significant new innovations, many older devices are not able to successfully upgrade without an impact on the customer experience. Our goal is to only offer the Windows 10 upgrade to devices that we are confident can continue to deliver a good customer experience.”
