New lightweight version of Skype available in India

Microsoft has just launched Skype Lite, a lightweight version of its VoIP client that is specifically optimized to work on 2G or highly unstable connections, while also offering support for old devices without a big impact on system performance.

Skype Lite is exclusive to Android devices and one of its main features is support for old versions of the operating system, with Microsoft explaining that even phones running Android 4.0.3 can install it.

The application is specifically designed for the Indian market, and Microsoft explains that it designed it to reduce data usage when making Skype calls, while also displaying traffic stats in the app all the time.

Other than that, the typical Skype features are also there, including chatting support via Skype or SMS, free voice and video calls with anyone on Skype, photo sharing support, emoticons, and even bots.

“Skype Lite is the new Skype built for India that meets your daily communication needs with your friends, family and groups. It is small, fast, and capable. It is built with the latest Skype technology to perform well - even under limited network connections - and help you save money,” Microsoft explains.

No comment on a possible launch in other markets

Although Skype Lite is exclusively available in India, there’s no doubt that it would come in handy to users in other regions too, but Microsoft is yet to comment on any plans to launch the application elsewhere.

“One app for all your Skype chats and SMS messages - you can even separate promotional SMS messages from the messages that matter most. Explore the world of Skype bots designed especially for India. Skype Lite is also available in Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu,” the software giant says without providing any hints on a possible launch of Skype in other markets.

If you want to give the app a try, you can download Skype Lite for Android right now using the APK file and keep in mind that it supports Android 4.0.3 and newer.
