Lots of bug fixes and several known issues this time

The Anniversary Update is one of the Windows 10 versions that got patched today with a cumulative update, with OS build bumped to 14393.1770 once the install comes to an end.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4041691 for the Anniversary Update comes with changes that are also part of the other patches shipped today, including fixes for Internet Explorer, but it’s important to note that there are several security improvements this time which emphasizes just how critical it is for users to install it as soon as possible.

For example, there are security updates for the Windows kernel, Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer, Device Guard, Windows Storage and file systems, Windows DNS, and the Windows Scripting engine.

But what’s also super-important to know, especially because this is a cumulative update shipped to millions of PCs out there, is that there are three different known issues that Microsoft has already acknowledged and which everyone should have in mind before the install.

Known issues

Microsoft says that after installing this update, downloading updates using express installation files may fail. In this case, there’s also a workaround, which comes down to downloading the updates you want from the Update Catalog, opening a CMD prompt with administrator rights and typing the following commands:

sc config bits start= disabled

net stop bits

Manually install the update that you couldn’t install because of the bug and then launch a new CMD prompt and enter the following commands:

sc config bits start= delayed-auto

net start bits

This is just a temporary workaround, the company says, and a fix should be included in an upcoming update, most likely in the next cumulative update.

There are also two other known issues that don’t have a workaround for the time being. Users could see the KB numbers appear twice in the Installed Updates list when the cumulative update is deployed using the delta update. And last but not least, errors might be experienced to indicate that an application exception has occurred when closing specific apps.
