Company preparing to replace Wunderlist altogether

Microsoft has announced To-Do Preview, an early version of a new task management app that works across a wide variety of platforms, including not only Windows 10 but also iOS and Android. A web version of Microsoft To-Do is also available should you want to access your info without having to install an app.

So what’s the deal with this new app? As one could easily guess, its purpose is to help users create to-do lists and reminders, and keep track of tasks with just a single service, and unsurprisingly, it comes with almost the same feature package as Wunderlist.

The release of To-Do is basically the first major step that Microsoft makes towards the demise of Wunderlist, as the company will discontinue this app and launch its very own offering a series of extra features, like Office 365 integration and others. Wunderlist was purchased last year and if development of To-Do advances at the desired pace, the transition could take place by the end of the year.

Wunderlist to be retired

This is a strategy that Microsoft has adopted for other mobile apps as well, and the best example is Accompli’s email client that was purchased two years ago and then converted to Microsoft Outlook. At this point, the Outlook client is spearheading Microsoft’s email efforts, and the app is available on Windows, iOS, and Android, based on the feature package of the original client.

At this point, Microsoft To-Do does not work on iOS and Android tablets, but Microsoft says such versions are already planned, together with a Mac client.

“Once we are confident that we have incorporated the best of Wunderlist into To-Do, we will retire Wunderlist. While the name and icon may change, the team that brought you Wunderlist continues on. We look forward to making To-Do even more useful, intuitive and personal,” Microsoft explains.

On Windows 10, Microsoft To-Do arrives as a universal app, so it works not only on PCs but also on smartphones powered by Windows 10 Mobile.
