Original Windows 10 version reaches end of servicing today

May 9 marks the end for Windows 10 RTM, the original version of the operating system that Microsoft launched in July 2015 and which the company will no longer service starting today.

This means that Windows 10 version 1507 isn’t getting any other security updates and quality updates beyond today’s Patch Tuesday, with users still running it recommended to upgrade to a newer version as soon as possible.

Windows 10 users still on 1507 can move to the Anniversary Update or the Creators Update, with the latter obviously the preferred choice since it was released last month and brings a long list of improvements. Furthermore, installing the Creators Update means that no other upgrade would be required when the Anniversary Update also reaches end of servicing.

Support extended for 2 months

Windows 10 version 1507 was originally scheduled to go dark in March this year, but Microsoft decided to extend support for an extra 2 months. Systems running Windows 10 Home, Pro, Education, and Enterprise SKUs are all getting the last updates on version 1507 today, unless they are enrolled in the Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2015 LTSB branches.

“If you continue to use version 1507, your computer will still work, but since you won’t continue to receive new security updates or other quality updates, it could become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Microsoft offers complimentary support to ensure your device has the latest updates installed and requires that your device be up to date before assisting with other technical support issues,” Microsoft explains.

Installing the Creators Update is without a doubt the best option for Windows 10 users, and anyone can do this right now via the Update Assistant.

On the other hand, Microsoft recommends everyone to stick with the Windows Update automatic method because it prevents any compatibility issue that might be experienced. For Windows 10 users who aren’t yet seeing the Creators Update in Windows Update, the only option is a manual download, especially given the EOS that the original version is reaching today.
