Windows phones only available at retailers now

We’ve known for a while that Windows phones were dead, but another important milestone was reached today: Microsoft has sold the very last units it had in stock, and there are obviously no plans to make any more available.

The only two Windows phones that Microsoft was still selling are now listed as “out of stock,” and the company now recommends customers to turn to third-party resellers, who themselves have few to no units available at the moment.

This means that Windows phones are close to disappearing completely from stores, and your best choice if for some reason you still want to buy such a device is to check eBay or similar sites.

Microsoft’s new mobile device

Seeing Microsoft stopping sales of Windows phones is by no means surprising given the current state of the platform and the fact that even the company itself confirmed that it has no future plans for Windows 10 Mobile. No new features and devices are planned, Microsoft says.

Instead, what the company does right now is sell phones from other companies and running Android, including Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and Razer Phone. These devices are available both in stores and online.

Microsoft’s mobile strategy is more or less a thing that’s pretty hard to decrypt, as the company is believed to be working on a new mobile device that wouldn’t launch as a typical smartphone, but as a product with multiple form factors and possibly also including phone capabilities.

While many call this device the “Surface Phone,” there’s a good chance it won’t be it, and Microsoft is more likely to try to invent a new device category rather than continue in the phone business. More information on this front could see daylight in the coming months, as the company is believed to be getting closer to finalizing plans for this new mobile device.
