14 DAY TRIAL // Back in 2016, Microsoft introduced EPUB file support in Edge browser, making it possible for users to read eBooks without the need for a third-party application.
And as it turns out, Microsoft was planning for the long term with this feature, as the company is now working on making eBooks available in the Windows Store, so users will be able to download and read books right on their Windows 10 devices.
What’s very important to note is that Microsoft is planning to bring this feature on all Windows 10 devices, including not only PCs and tablets but also smartphones. Edge browser will be the essential tool for this, as it’ll let users read the eBooks without the need for third-party apps.
As reported by MSPU, there will be a new eBook category in the Windows Store and some of the books will be available for a fee. Buying them would work just like in the case of apps and games, so if you already configured a payment method, the whole process shouldn’t take more than just a few seconds.
New features coming to Edge
Microsoft Edge will also get additional features to manage purchased and downloaded eBooks, so the browser will have a library to put you in control of all the items. There will also be other features added to Microsoft Edge, including bookmarks, an option that’s available in pretty much any eBook reader out there and letting you continue reading from where you left off.
Microsoft will also add some customization options to Microsoft Edge’s eBook support feature, including themes, multiple fonts, and font size. Light and dark themes are very likely to be offered as well.
Right now, it’s not yet clear when this new feature is expected to roll out, but insiders should receive it in the coming builds shipped as part of the Windows Insider program. Eventually, however, all users should get it with the Creators Update due in April.
