Mandatory update for Windows Insider app released

Windows 10 Mobile is just around the corner for Windows Phone devices, and rumor has it that the company could ship the first wave of upgrades as soon as tomorrow.

So today, the software giant has pushed a mandatory update for the Windows Insider app, which indeed suggests that the official release of the new OS is imminent.

The Windows Insider app version has been bumped from 1.3.231.4 to 1.3.233.2, and although the change might not seem significant, it's very important for two different reasons.

First of all, it's mandatory, so when you launch the Windows Insider app on a phone without updating it, you are automatically prompted to download and install the new version.

Second of all, it's likely an update that will configure insiders' devices to switch to the rs1_release branch, which is actually the one testing Windows 10 Redstone builds. The change has already been made on Windows 10 PCs enrolled in the Windows Insider program after the November Update officially launched, so this switch could suggest that Windows 10 Mobile is ready for the public debut.

Windows 10 Mobile to launch in waves

Even though seeing Windows 10 Mobile going live is clearly big news, it's worth knowing that the new operating system will be rolled out in stages, so not all devices will get it at first.

It's believed that Lumia 640, 640 XL, 830, and 930 are among those handsets to get Windows 10 Mobile in a first round that could begin as soon as tomorrow. The release schedule hasn't been announced yet, but don't be too surprised if Microsoft indeed rolls Windows 10 Mobile tomorrow, as the company also ships this month's Patch Tuesday updates during the same day.

Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.63, which was released to fast ring insiders last week, could be the upgrade version shipping to Windows Phone devices as well.
