Email Insights, an experimental project by Microsoft Garage

Microsoft Garage has announced a new experimental Windows app called Email Insights whose purpose is, as the developing team itself puts it, “to get your emails faster.”

Emails Insights is in essence a mail client, but its focus is on search capabilities, so it’s mostly designed to help you find a specific email faster than in the existing applications.

The Microsoft Garage project thus comes as a lightweight app with straightforward interface that offers a mix of relevance and recency-based results, while also boasting guided search through email autocomplete and “fuzzy” person name search. There are commands for quick actions, as well as tabs for easy navigation across the main features.

“Searching through emails can be tedious at times. You might have to keep scrolling to find that elusive email. We present a lightweight no-frills email application to alleviate these problems,” Microsoft says in the description of the app.

Just a Microsoft Garage project… for now

For some reason, the app can no longer be downloaded from Microsoft’s site, but it’s probably just a temporary issue and Email Insights should re-become available anytime soon.

As for its features, we have no doubt that Windows 10 users sticking with the built-in mail app would absolutely want a better search feature in the operating system. The existing search capabilities in Mail are basic to say the least and the app often fails to find the email we’re looking for.

Since it’s just a Microsoft Garage project, there’s no indication on whether Microsoft plans to release it as a separate app for its users or maybe integrate its features into the operating system. But without a doubt, continued work in the email client category comes in handy to all users who want to stick with the built-in Mail universal app, especially because some of its features are still behind those of third-party clients.
