Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 cumulative update KB3206632 a few hours ago for devices running the Anniversary Update, and it appears that in addition to the improvements mentioned in the changelog, this particular patch also repairs a critical problem that some users have been experiencing lately.

A company spokesperson told us that cumulative update KB3206632 fixes Internet connection issues hitting a number of Windows 10 computers in the last 7 days due to what was believed to be a botched update.

At this point, it’s still not clear which update caused some computers to be unable to connect to the Internet, but there were users claiming that a previous cumulative update, KB3201845, was the source of the bug.

New cumulative update to the rescue

This isn’t confirmed, however, and reports of broken Internet connections on Windows 10 actually surfaced on December 8, one day before Microsoft pushed cumulative update KB3201845 to users running the stable version of the operating system - users participating in the Windows Insider program received it in late November.

“We released an update on December 13 that will automatically install and resolve connectivity difficulties reported by some customers. To receive the update, customers may need to first restart their PCs by selecting Start on the taskbar, clicking the Power button, and choosing Restart (not Shut down). Additional guidance can be found on our support forum here,” a company spokesperson told us in a statement this morning.

The forum discussion that the statement links to includes more information and confirms that the new cumulative update shipped on Patch Tuesday addresses the Internet connectivity issues.

“KB3206632 was released to resolve this issue. Customers should first take the steps above if they are unable to connect to the Internet, and then install the update. You can manually check for updates by clicking Settings, Update & Security, Windows Update and click Check for Updates. Click the Update History button to verify it if has already been installed. For most others, KB3206632 will be installed automatically,” a Microsoft engineer said.

Users need to follow instructions in these statements to get the new cumulative update, and in the case of computers still left with no Internet connection, they can revert to a previous restore point and then download the new CU.
