Systems with AMD chips allowed to download latest build

Microsoft has recently announced that it fixed issues with AMD systems for users participating in the Windows Insider program, lifting a restriction that prevented computers with such hardware from downloading Windows 10 build 17074.

Meltdown and Spectre patches released in early January caused a series of issues on Windows computers with AMD chipsets, including boot failures and BSODs. Microsoft suspended updates for all impacted configurations, and blocked systems enrolled in the Insider program from getting new builds.

The company announced today that the restriction is no longer in place, as all reported bugs impacting AMD machines trying to download both security updates for Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities and new Windows 10 Redstone 4 builds have finally been fixed.

New build for Fast ring insiders on AMD hardware

The fix released to insiders comes as build 17074.1002 and is pushed via Windows Update as a cumulative update. Only Fast ring users with AMD chipsets get it, as everyone else in the same channel can download the original build published on January 11.

“This build is the same as the version of Build 17074 released last week with 2 additional fixes. We have fixed the issue causing AMD PCs to become unbootable – which means we have removed the block for AMD PCs we put in place last week. And we also fixed the issue causing certain devices to hang on the boot screen after upgrading if virtualization is enabled in the BIOS,” Microsoft explains.

Windows 10 Redstone 4 is already in advanced development stages and it should be finalized in March this year, before being released to the production ring in April.

Most likely, Windows 10 RS4 will be known as version 1803 and will originally be released in RTM form to insiders all available rings. Just like it happened with the previous release (Fall Creators Update), the rollout will take place in stages, as telemetry on hardware and software compatibility issues is collected and patches are shipped in advance of the final build.
