Users need to update their devices twice, Microsoft explains

Windows 10 Mobile build 10536 is now available for download, but many insiders were surprised to see two builds showing up on their phones, and not just one, as it usually happens when Microsoft releases new versions of the phone operating system.

This time, both Windows 10 Mobile build 10514 and build 10536 are being downloaded and installed, but in case you’re wondering what’s happening, Microsoft has a good explanation for this.

It’s because of the updategen bug

As you know, the company pulled the plug on Windows 10 Mobile build 10536 at the very last minute on Friday, deciding to delay the release because of an upgrade bug. Build 10514 helps the company address this problem, so the company says that you must first install this one and only then proceed with 10536.

“Insiders updating from Build 10512 will need to update their devices twice. The first update will be Build 10536.1000. After this update is installed, you’ll receive another update which will be Build 10536.1004. This process will take a bit more time than usual but this update has all the important fixes for Build 10536 so you will want to make sure you take BOTH updates. If you don’t have a problem going back to Windows Phone 8.1, you can update directly to this build (10536.1004),” Microsoft goes on to detail.

When asked why two updates show up on Windows 10 Mobile devices, Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, explained:

“This is a function of how we had to repackage the update to work around the updategen issue. Will update the blog post to explain.”

Installation of the two builds indeed takes a while, and you should either have your phone fully charged or plugged in. In our case, it took more than one hour to complete installation of build 10514 and about another half an hour to deploy 10536.
