If this new phone ever gets the go-ahead, of course

Microsoft is often accused of trying to leave Windows phones behind, but the most recent speculation seems to be pointing to a new overhaul of the company’s mobile platform that would bring it in line with the PC.

And while Microsoft itself has reiterated its commitment to the software side of the mobile push, little has been said about hardware, with the company only dropping some hints on rare occasions that something big could land.

The Windows phone community, on the other hand, is still dreaming about a Surface Phone that would change the game completely, though given the current market share it’s unlikely for Windows phone to ever return as a top mobile platform in the consumer market.

Microsoft CEO also promised an ultimate mobile device

But if Microsoft indeed decided to launch a new phone, you should expect the unexpected, Microsoft general manager for Surface Ryan Gavin said in a recent interview with BI, as the company wants to continue innovating and release something that nobody else did.

The next phone “will not resemble what we know and think of as a phone today,” Gavin explained, though it’s worth emphasizing that there’s still no confirmation that a new Windows phone is on its way.

And while we can only hope that Microsoft indeed gives the go-ahead to this exciting project, Gavin’s comments come in line with a statement released by CEO Satya Nadella back in November 2016 and promising “the ultimate mobile device.”

“We don’t want to be driven by just envy of what others have,” he said. “The question is, what can we bring? That’s where I look at any device form factor or any technology, even AI. We will continue to be in the phone market not as defined by today’s market leaders, but by what it is that we can uniquely do in what is the most ultimate mobile device,” Nadella concluded.
