The Edge dev team talks about the new browser in Q&A session

Microsoft Edge isn’t quite that fierce Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox rival that some users have been waiting for, but the Redmond-based software giant surely wants to make it so, and the next few updates that the browser is going to get are expected to bring some pretty significant improvements.

One of them is extension support, and although there’s no timing on this release, the Microsoft Edge development team has said in a Q&A session on Twitter that they’re working hard to bring it as soon as possible. Extensions are a priority right now for the Edge team, they add, and it’s no wonder why.

This is pretty much the biggest feature missing from the Edge lineup, and Microsoft hopes that, by making Chrome extensions work in its browser either with small changes or no changes at all, it could finally compete against the others with a bigger chance to succeed.

But at the same time, there are some other improvements that are planned right now.

Edge on Xbox One

It’s no secret that Windows 10 is an effort to bring together all Microsoft’s platforms, so now the Edge dev team reiterates that the browser is definitely coming to Xbox One. Again, there are no details as to when this could happen, but expect it with an update in late 2015 or early 2016 (the latter deadline seems more likely).

Other features that the Edge team is now working on are reading list synchronization across devices (Edge will be offered as a universal app working on PCs, tablets, and phones running Windows 10, so Microsoft wants users to be able to sync reading lists), mouse scrolling improvements, favorites syncing, fullscreen support, and some sort of DLNA-like streaming options to a TV.

The Edge team has also confirmed that the upcoming extensions will be available in the store, most likely in their dedicated tab, and that updates for the browser can also be shipped in the same way, since it’s a universal app, but the company prefers to use Windows Update for the time being.
