Microsoft took the wraps off the second-generation Surface Book earlier this week in a surprise announcement that coincided with the release of the Fall Creators Update, and now the company has started the marketing offensive to show the world how great the new devices are.

Microsoft’s head of devices and services Yusuf Mehdi said in an interview with Silicon that the new Surface Book 2 mixes “power, best design, and versatility,” praising the battery life of up to 17 hours as one of the main highlights.

Battery life is often compromised by device makers trying to achieve these three qualities, he said, but the Surface Book 2 has managed to integrate all of them without any tradeoff.

Surface Book 2 more creative than the MacBook

Mehdi praised the creativity side of the Surface Book 2, pointing to the touchscreen and the support for the Surface Pen and the Surface Dial as the main reasons it’s a better choice than the Apple MacBook.

“None of these [featured] you get on the MacBook,” Mehdi was quoted as saying. “Creation has never been more important than it is today in our minds. We think that opportunity is before us. We’ve been on this journey in every successive release. We want Surface to continue to do this and we’re excited to work with our partners. Our ecosystem doesn’t get the amount of credit it should.”

Speaking about the future of devices in Microsoft’s vision, Mehdi pointed out that there’s no chance the company gives up on hardware, with the Surface Book 2 living proof that the Surface lineup is here to stay. Recent reports from analysts and experts suggested that Microsoft was pondering killing off the Surface and instead focus exclusively on cloud and software.

“We’re fully committed to the devices business at Microsoft and the Surface, Xbox and HoloLens lines,” Mehdi stated. With the 15-inch screen, the Surface Book 2 is the top MacBook alternative right now, and you can check out more details about the two in this comparison article here.
