Redmond gives up on its affordable flagship

Microsoft launched the Lumia 830 with much fanfare 10 months ago, introducing the new phone as the company's “affordable flagship” and describing it as the best option for those who want high-end features at a lower price.

And yet, Redmond is now giving up on the phone, as reports online now reveal that the company has stopped production of this particular model and is now clearing out inventories across the world.

WMPU writes that Lumia 830 was pushed to end of life way ahead of its time, so no other units will be manufactured, while demo units will be removed from Microsoft's stores. The Lumia 830 will be replaced by Lumia 735 in some parts of the world and by Lumia 640 XL in others.

Microsoft could pull the plug on more phones

This decision comes ahead of a new plan that Microsoft is ready to embrace for its mobile lineup, lowering the number of available devices to only six and focusing on just three different categories, namely value, business, and high-end.

“We will run a more effective phone portfolio, with better products and speed to market given the recently formed Windows and Devices Group,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said last month.

“We plan to narrow our focus to three customer segments where we can make unique contributions and where we can differentiate through the combination of our hardware and software. We’ll bring business customers the best management, security and productivity experiences they need; value phone buyers the communications services they want; and Windows fans the flagship devices they’ll love.”

This means that more Windows Phone devices could be axed in the coming months as Microsoft continues this mobile reorganization.

Lumia 830 (which we already reviewed here) comes with a 5-inch display and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of RAM. It comes by default with 16 GB of storage space, but more can be obtained with a microSD card of up to 128 GB. It obviously runs Windows Phone 8.1 and will be fully upgradeable to Windows 10 when it becomes available later this year.
