This feature is not ready for prime time, it says

One of the changes that Microsoft will be making in Windows 10 is to allow users to install their apps on SD cards, thus making it possible to bring to the market devices with lower storage and thus available with a smaller price tag.

But it turns out that this particular feature won’t be available at launch, as additional work still needs to be made. A company representative confirmed in a post on Microsoft Community forums that installing apps on SD cards will indeed be possible in Windows 10, but not on day 1, so expect this feature to arrive later this year, most likely with the same update supposed to bring us extension support for Microsoft Edge.

“We have actually made the decision to postpone the apps on SD functionality to a later release. While I know this feature excited many of us, we didn't feel like it was ready for prime time. Our goal is to delight users with everything that we build, and we truly feel that that is what will happen once we have fully built our vision for this feature,” the company rep said.

Why is this important?

Basically, installing apps on SD cards makes it possible to save storage on the device itself, and this way, manufacturers can build devices with reduced storage in order to cut their price.

This way, offering only a few GBs of storage space, but with SD card support for those who need it, is the way to go to keep the price down and still have decent hardware capabilities.

Tablets running Windows 10 are expected to hit the market soon after the July 29 launch of the new operating system, so there’s no doubt that this feature’s going to be one of the eagerly awaited by those who buy such a device.

Microsoft is also betting big on tablets with Windows 10, as the new OS comes with Continuum, a feature that allows users to switch from the desktop mode to touch in a second by simply removing the keyboard from their device. Needless to say, this is a feature that’s more appropriate for 2-in-1s, but a tablet mode can also be turned on manually if there’s no keyboard for your tablet.
