Redmond teases possible Store version of Movie Maker

Windows Movie Maker was a pretty successful solution that was bundled with older versions of Windows, but in Windows 10, users have no other choice than to turn to alternatives because Microsoft has already left behind the app.

And yet, there’s now hope that Microsoft could at some point bring Windows Movie Maker back in a modern flavor because the company has recently teased that a project in this regard might be in the works behind closed doors.

As WindowsCentral notes, a silent update that Microsoft made to a support page reveals that “Movie Maker will soon be available from Windows Store for Windows 10 users,” so the software giant could be planning on releasing a universal app with the same functionality and working on PCs and mobile devices powered by Windows 10.

Details are missing at this point, and it looks like Microsoft has already removed this line from the support page, so it’s hard to say whether Windows Movie Maker for Windows 10 is still coming or not.

No updates since 2012

It certainly makes sense to launch a modern version of the app, as it would also support the company’s push for universal apps, but the company is clearly trying to remain tight-lipped on everything related to this project. The official page of Windows Movie Maker lists the app as compatible with Windows 8.1, Windows 7, Windows 7, and Windows RT, with no mention of a Windows 10 version whatsoever.

Although it can still be downloaded by Windows users, Windows Movie Maker hasn’t received updates in a while, and the chances that it won’t get any other updates until 2017, when Microsoft gives up on the entire Windows Essentials package.

End of support is projected for January 17, 2017, so there’s a chance that Windows Movie Maker could return for Windows 10 users with the arrival of Redstone 2 in the spring of next year.
