All users can now pause updates for their devices

Microsoft has announced that beginning with the upcoming Windows 10 feature updates, all users, including here those running the Home SKU, would be allowed to pause updates for a maximum of 35 days.

Previously, this option was exclusively available for Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise users, so starting with the May 2019 Update launching next month, everyone on Windows 10, regardless of version, would be able to push back updates for 35 days.

Microsoft first implemented a setting to pause updates in January in the preview builds shipped to Windows insiders, but the original implementation only came with a 7-day grace period.

Option aimed at all categories of updates

As Microsoft explains, the new option is available not only for feature updates but also for the monthly updates, often referred to as cumulative updates.

“This extension ability is for all editions of Windows 10, including Home. Based on user feedback we know that any update can come at an inconvenient time, such as when a PC is needed for a big presentation. So, we’re making it possible for all users to pause both feature and monthly updates for up to 35 days (seven days at a time, up to five times). Once the 35-day pause period is reached, users will need to update their device before pausing again,” Microsoft explains.

The next feature update for Windows 10 is called May 2019 Update, and while the RTM build has already been compiled, Microsoft wants to spend more time testing it before the public launch.

As a result, the new update will be released to the Release Preview ring next week and will stay there for about one month. During this whole time, the software giant will ship several cumulative updates to refine the experience with the update and to resolve the last bugs before the May 2019 Update gets the green light for production devices.
