The application is powered by the MobileFusion system

According to a recent article posted on the Microsoft Research project's website by Allison Linn, there's a new app out there that transforms any smartphone device into a comprehensive 3D scanner.

With the respective app, which has been developed by a bunch of scientists, iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone users will be able to create high-quality 3D images of objects in real-time in no time, just like you would take a normal photo.

The application uses a system called MobileFusion, which appears to be much more advanced than any other existing method on the market for creating 3D images using nothing but a mobile device, no matter if it's an iPhone, Windows Phone, or Android phone.

What's more interesting is the fact that the said application does not rely on anything but the respective mobile phone. It doesn't need an Internet connection to work, and no additional hardware attached to the device.

"What this system effectively allows us to do is to take something similar to a picture, but it's a full 3D object," said Peter Ondruska, a Ph.D. candidate at Oxford University who was part of the research team working on the project during his internship at Microsoft Research.

Take a 3D photo and share it with your friends

When the application is released to users worldwide, they'll be able to scan in 3D anything they want while traveling or working, and then share that 3D image to their friends and family.

Also, the app promises to create high-quality photos that will be extremely useful in areas like augmented-reality video games and 3D printing. At the moment, there's no word on what devices it will work, but it has been tested on an iPhone.

The application will be showcased later this fall at the International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR) 2015 event that will take place between September 29 and October 3 in Fukuoka, Japan.
