The app will launch for insiders later this week

The Build 2018 conference isn’t all about developers, as Joe Belfiore’s tomorrow keynote will include a preview of a new application called Your Phone.

With a name that pretty much explains everything about its purpose, Your Phone is a modern version of Phone Companion, though Microsoft itself says it’s a different approach.

Your Phone is supposed to bring phones and Windows 10 PCs in sync, offering features to quickly access content stored on the mobile device without even unlocking it. Joe Belfiore is expected to offer a demo of the app, showing how pictures, videos, and documents on phones can be used on PCs seamlessly.

Microsoft will release Your Phone to insiders later this week, but the app is already available in the Microsoft Store, and by the looks of things, pretty much anyone can download it.

“Link your phone and PC to send webpages from your phone instantly to your PC and continue what you’re doing - read, watch, or browse with all the benefits of a bigger screen,” the description of the app that shows when launching it reads.

Coming with Redstone 5?

With Your Phone, Microsoft pushes its new strategy of bringing its services to Android and iOS devices one step further. The company has already launched Microsoft Edge, Cortana, and others on non-Windows mobile devices, and Your Phone is built specifically to take advantage of this cross-platform push.

Your Phone could be released to users with the upcoming Redstone 5 update for Windows 10 due in the fall. Microsoft, however, hasn’t said whether this is indeed the case, as the simple fact that the app is available for download from the Microsoft Store suggests that other Windows 10 versions could be supported as well.

More information will be provided tomorrow during Joe Belfiore’s keynote, including details on app availability and supported devices.
