“Messaging everywhere” feature to be added very soon

Microsoft has recently announced that Windows 10 users will soon receive an update that will enable the so-called “Messaging everywhere” feature in the operating system, which lets them send messages through their phones right from a PC desktop.

The company hasn’t provided any timing information to let us know when this update is going to land, but it has explained that an update is necessary on Windows 10 Mobile to enable it.

At first, this new functionality will only work on devices running Windows 10 Mobile, but at some point in the future, Microsoft’s aiming to expand it to Android devices as well.

“We will soon be enabling a preview of the ‘Messaging everywhere’ feature in Windows 10 that allows you to send and receive text messages from your phone directly from your Windows 10 PC’s. You will see options for this feature in the Messaging app on PC but not on Mobile. A newer Mobile build is required for this experience to fully light up. More to come on this when the experience is live,” Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, explained.

Only for Redstone Windows 10 Mobile devices

New Windows 10 builds are now expected to launch next week, but it remains to be seen if Microsoft has enough time to complete testing of the update supposed to enable this feature.

Only Windows 10 Mobile devices running Redstone builds will support it, so models that are still on 10586 won’t be able to send messages from their PCs.

While insiders will be the first to get such functionality, retail users will receive it with the Anniversary Update coming in the summer and bringing many more features besides this. For example, browser extensions for Edge are also scheduled to be part of the release, and so is a redesigned Start menu that will put apps at the core of everything.
