14 DAY TRIAL // Windows 10 is offered as a free upgrade to users running Windows 7 and 8.1, but only as long as they are consumers, as businesses and enterprises still have to pay for the new operating system.
To better manage the free upgrade, Microsoft launched in June the “Get Windows 10” app, a piece of software that specifically scans a computer to determine whether Windows 10 can be installed or not and if any compatibility issues might arise.
It turns out that so many people are pleased with how the “Get Windows 10” app worked on consumers’ computers that Microsoft decided to release it for businesses too, thus giving more people the option to upgrade to the new operating system.
Only for small businesses
In an announcement today, Microsoft has revealed that “Get Windows 10” app will also be released for small businesses and organizations later this month, as long as they run a genuine copy of Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8.1 Pro, are configured to receive updates via Windows Update, and are part of an Active Directory domain.
“Because of ongoing customer requests from many small businesses and other small organizations to easily take advantage of the free upgrade, we will soon make the Get Windows 10 app available to them as well,” Microsoft explains.
“Like consumers, small businesses and organizations will soon be able to receive notifications about the upgrade and then directly upgrade to Windows 10 through an easy-to-use interface right from the system tray on their Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8.1 Pro PC.”
Companies and organizations running the Enterprise version of Windows 7 or 8.1 won’t receive the “Get Windows 10” app, Microsoft guarantees, as it aims to provide all of its customers with more options to handle the upgrade to the new operating system.
In the case of consumers, however, the Get Windows 10 app has caused quite a lot of trouble so far, with many struggling to get rid of it, but the company re-enabling it automatically with small updates.
