Security upgrades planned for the next Windows 10 version

Microsoft has just announced that the upcoming Windows 10 Fall Creators Update would come with major security improvements to protect both home users and enterprises.

Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection, also known as ATP, will be integrated across the entire Windows threat protection stack, and will also support Windows Server. Windows Defender ATP will also include new features, such as Windows Defender Exploit Guard and Windows Defender Application Guard.

“We think of Windows Defender ATP as a suite of tools. It was engineered to challenge traditional AV solutions and bring our customers on a journey to next-gen security,” Microsoft explains.

EMET integrated into Windows Defender ATP

Windows Defender Exploit Guard will make EMET native to Windows 10, which means that IT pros will get new tools for intrusion prevention, even in those cases when zero-days are not patched yet. Vulnerabilities will be substantially more difficult to exploit, Microsoft says, and Exploit Guard will include new rules and policies to block intrusions on a Windows 10 system.

Windows Defender Application Guard will also be a new feature that will provide additional protection in the case of accidental downloads of malware from the browser or zero-days.

“WDAG isolates and contains the threat, securing your devices, apps, data and network. Windows Defender ATP will provide optics on detection and response so Sec-Ops will have full visibility to any threats that have been encountered,” Microsoft says.

Application control will also be improved, and the software giant notes that Windows Defender Device Guard will be integrated into Windows Defender ATP. And last but not least, new Security Analytics will allow tracking of Windows security features utilization and configuration, as well as the current patch status across systems in a larger network. This means that IT admins will always not when systems in their networks are not patched and vulnerable to attacks.

The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is projected to be finalized in September, but some of these features will make their way to insider builds in the summer.
