New features coming to Office on iPhone and iPad

Microsoft has announced a new series of improvements for its Office productivity suite on iPhone and iPad as part of its January update, including drag and drop support.

Available for Office 365 subscribers, drag and drop support makes it substantially easier to move files to and from OneDrive and other sources across iOS, and Microsoft says it can be used for integrating photos, graphs, and other objects from different sources directly into documents.

OneDrive has also been updated with support for the Files app in iOS 11, and it’s part of the new Office suite on iPhone and iPad as well.

“This means iPhone and iPad users can upload, access, edit, and save content to OneDrive or SharePoint from any iOS app that supports File app integration—a top requested feature. Users can also tag their favorite OneDrive and SharePoint files from within the Files app, making it easier to find and use the content that matters to you,” Microsoft explains.

Co-authoring for the Apple ecosystem

Outlook for iOS is also being revamped with a new search experience based on Microsoft Graph, so it now provides results from contacts, upcoming travel entries, package deliveries, attachments, and others.

“Together with proactive search suggestions and a unified design, it now provides consistent, personalized results that enable you to discover information from across your organization faster,” Microsoft says.

Users committed to the Apple ecosystem and having both a Mac and an iPhone or iPad are provided with co-authoring features. This means two or more users can work on a certain document at the same time and see what they’re doing and view changes in real-time. This feature already exists on the desktop and on Android, and with this update, Microsoft is releasing it for Apple users as well.

Microsoft says these features are being rolled out to Office 365 subscribers as well, and some devices might receive them later than others. If you didn’t get them already, check again in a few days.
