Just as expected, Microsoft used the Mobile World Congress 2019 in Spain to introduce the company’s second-generation holographic headset called HoloLens.

The device features a smaller price as compared to the first model, as well as new hardware and a refined design.

Microsoft has paid particular attention to improving the field of view, which reaches 52 degrees, up from 34 degrees on the previous model. HoloLens 2 features new gestures, including eye tracking that supports Windows Hello and automatic sign-in.

The second-generation headset runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 850 processor, but oddly enough, it does not come with 5G or LTE support. Microsoft says it also wanted the device to be more comfortable, so it uses a redesigned front that’s made of carbon fiber.

Anodized aluminum cooling channels are being used for cooling the processor, and the device boasts a universal fit system which Microsoft says allows it to be used with glasses.

$1,500 cheaper than original model

The battery life has been improved to 3.5 hours, and the company explains that you should really be able to take advantage of it because it estimates the HoloLens 2 is 3 times more comfortable than its predecessor. Fast charging is being offered as well thanks to a high-speed USB-C port

HoloLens 2 also features a wide array of sensors, including an Azure Kinect sensor, the typical accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer, as well as a 5-channel microphone and built-in spatial audio.

The second-generation HoloLens is more affordable than its predecessor and it costs only $3,500, though the device won’t be sold to consumers, but only to businesses. Microsoft has also prepared a set of software solutions specifically aimed at this category of customers, including OneDrive for Business, which will come pre-loaded.

There are no details as for when it could become available for customers, but given it won’t be offered to end users, companies can just reach out to Microsoft for release specifics.
