Microsoft has just announced that the Desktop App Converter, a dedicated solution released as part of Project Centennial and which allows developers to port desktop programs to the Windows Store, is now available in the Store, along with the first apps that have been ported using this tool.

The Desktop App Converter was announced earlier this year at Build as an easy way for developers to make the most of Windows 10’s universal app capabilities by simply bringing software designed to run on the desktop in the Store. This way, desktop programs can implement features such as Cortana support and live tiles which are exclusive to Store apps.

The application was originally available as a separate download from Microsoft’s Download Center, but starting today, it’s also published in the store. This allows the firm to easily deliver updates and fixes to developers as soon as they are released.

Ported apps already up for grabs from the store

In addition, Microsoft is also announcing that starting today, users can download a series of apps that have been specifically ported with the Desktop App Converter, and these include Evernote, Arduino IDE, and Double Twist.

“These are the same apps that customers know and love, but are now available for download in the trusted Windows Store,” Kevin Gallo, the CVP of the Windows Developer organization, explains.

And last but not least, Microsoft revealed that beginning today, more Windows installer technologies offer support for Project Centennial, making it easier to port apps to the Store.

“Our partners, Flexera Software with InstallShield, FireGiant with WiX and Caphyon with Advanced Installer; three of the most popular Windows installer technologies, have included support for the Desktop Bridge, enabling developers to directly build an app package with their existing desktop app using the bridge as part of their existing developer workflow,” Gallo revealed.

The new apps, as well as the Desktop App Converter, can already be downloaded from the Store and updates will be delivered automatically once they become available.
