CSS Custom Properties to launch in Creators Update

Microsoft has recently announced that the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update would bring another improvement for web developers: CSS Custom Properties.

The company explains in a long blog post that’s primarily aimed at developers the advantages of using CSS Custom Properties, revealing that they’ve been available in Windows Insider preview builds starting with EdgeHTML 15.15061.

Microsoft says there’s a good reason why CSS Custom Properties are actually an important addition to the Edge feature arsenal, as not only they are fully cascaded and do not require recompiling the stylesheets, but they can also be used with JavaScript, one of the most popular platforms in use these days.

Focusing on interoperability

The company points out that getting CSS Custom Properties right does not come down to adding support in Edge browser, but it also involves additional work to make the feature fully interoperable.

“As we worked on our implementation, we found bugs in the implementations in existing browsers. As a result of this, we opened bugs against Blink, Gecko, and WebKit, and look forward to improved implementations across the board – including fixes shipping as early as Chrome 56 that will make Custom Properties more interoperable,” Microsoft says.

The lengthy post is definitely worth a read for tech-savvy users who want to find out more about the new feature of Edge browser, but for everyone else, the bottom line is that this is coming with the Creators Update and insiders can already give it a try in preview builds.

For what it’s worth, the Windows 10 Creators Update is just around the corner, as the RTM build has already been compiled, and rumor has it that the launch could take place on April 11. ISOs for insiders are likely to ship this week, so it shouldn’t take too long before the Creators Update becomes available for everyone out there.
