Microsoft and Oracle announced a cloud interoperability partnership whose purpose is to link their cloud offerings and provide customers with access to what the two call a “best-of-both-clouds experience.”

By bringing Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud closer together, Microsoft and Oracle can better take on rivals like Amazon and Google, both of which are investing big in their attempt to attract large businesses.

As part of the deal, these enterprises can connect Azure services to Oracle cloud services, so it’s now possible to use Analytics and AI with Oracle’s Autonomous Database by dividing the workload in two different parts.

Based on a high-speed link between data centers operated by Microsoft and Oracle, the partnership between the two kicks off in the eastern United States, but it’s supposed to expand to other regions in the coming months.

Unique sign-in experience on the way

One of the priorities, Microsoft says, is to eventually provide customers with an easy way to log in to services from either company, all using nothing more than a single set of credentials regardless of the cloud provider they signed with.

Oracle applications can already use Azure Active Directory as identity provider and for conditional access, yet this feature is only available in early preview at this point.

“As the cloud of choice for the enterprise, with over 95% of the Fortune 500 using Azure, we have always been first and foremost focused on helping our customers thrive on their digital transformation journeys,” said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of Microsoft’s Cloud and AI division. “With Oracle’s enterprise expertise, this alliance is a natural choice for us as we help our joint customers accelerate the migration of enterprise applications and databases to the public cloud.”

In addition to the partnership between the two companies, Oracle Database will retain its Azure certification to run on various operating system on Microsoft cloud, including here Windows Server and Oracle Linux.
