Windows 10 has attempted to install on many PCs

Windows 10 is automatically downloaded on Windows 7 and 8.1 PCs where an upgrade reservation has been made, but recently it has emerged that Microsoft puts all installation files on computers with or without a reservation, just in case users want to upgrade.

But what’s worse is that Windows 10 has attempted to install on all these computers in the last few weeks, and according to a report by Forbes, Microsoft has confirmed that the operating system tried to launch the installer without specifically asking users for permission.

According to the source, some users were asked to reboot their computers because of pending updates, but after the restart occurred, the Windows 10 install was automatically started. Others, however, didn’t even see the Windows 10 upgrade message but only spotted in Control Panel > Windows Update > View update history that the OS tried to install several times but always failed.

The photo you see here comes to confirm that Windows 10 repeatedly tried to install to no avail, with a total of 31 different attempts between August 10 and September 4.

It was all caused by a bug

Forbes says that Microsoft has already admitted its mistake but claimed that it all happened because of a bug that was caused by one of the updates shipped in August. The company hasn’t disclosed the name of the update, but said that the error code it was causing was 0×80240020.

The bug has already been fixed, Microsoft adds, so if you’re yet to upgrade to Windows 10, the operating system should no longer attempt to install in the background.

On the bright side, even if your computer is automatically upgraded to Windows 10, there’s still an option to downgrade to your previous Windows version that’s available for 30 days.

Microsoft is yet to offer confirmation or issue a statement about these claims, so we’ve reached out to the company for more information and will update the article should an answer or clarification be provided.
