Microsoft is announcing the immediate availability of Intel's Linux-based operating system Clear Linux designed for Intel Architecture and built for a variety of cloud use cases on the company's Azure Marketplace.

Designed by Intel to offer users a highly optimized and performant computer OS for desktops and servers alike, Clear Linux is an open-source operating system that you can freely download and use for personal and commercial purposes. It's specifically engineered to maximize the value and performance of your Intel PC.

Intel's Clear Linux OS is the latest GNU/Linux distribution to become available on Microsoft's Azure public cloud platform, where customer can choose to run many other popular Linux-based operating systems, including Ubuntu, openSUSE, Debian, CentOS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Enterprise Linux, as well as Oracle Linux.

"By separating the system defaults and distribution best practices from the user configuration, Clear Linux simplifies maintenance and deployment which becomes very important as infrastructure scales," said Jose Miguel Parrella Product Manager, Open Source, at Microsoft.

Available today in three different image variants

Customers can immediately have access to a Clear Linux OS instance from Microsoft's Azure Marketplace, where the operating system is offered in three different image variants, the first one being a barebone system that they can use as a starting point for shaping up the operating system for their needs.

While the first offering is perfectly designed for hardcore users who adore having full control over the customization of the OS, Microsoft is providing Clear Linux as a container image that contains a popular container runtime for customers who don't have time to explore and build the OS from the ground up with bundles of their choosing.

Lastly, a machine learning image of Clear Linux is also in place, and it's pre-loaded with a multitude of Open Source tools that are well-known among the cloud and Linux communities. These are outlined by the company on Azure Marketplace as Clear Linux OS Basic, Clear Linux OS - Containers, and Clear Linux OS - Machine Learning.

Microsoft believes that its new Clear Linux OS offering in its Azure public cloud platform will enable DevOps teams to benefit from the stateless capabilities of the operating system, which already ships with its unique performance features that are praised by many developers, and even hardcore Linux gamers.
