KB4054517 failed to install on lots of systems running FCU

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4054517 was released as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday, and as we reported to you shortly after the rollout started, installation failed on several systems.

Microsoft has finally acknowledged the Windows 10 cumulative update KB4054517 issues, explaining in the official knowledge base article that it’s aware of two different bugs hitting some of the systems running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

First of all, it’s important to note Windows Update History might sometime incorrectly report that cumulative update KB4054517 failed to install with error 0x80070643. This is a bug that I’ve encountered as well and which according to a Microsoft engineer, means that “only part of the update failed, specifically some appx registration after everything else was done.”

Microsoft explains today that there are several ways to check whether the update was installed or not, including heading over to Windows Update and clicking Check for updates. If no additional updates are available, KB4054517 installed correctly, no matter what Windows Update History says.

Additionally, you can go the About your PC section in Settings to verify that your device is using OS build 16299.15. A full fix is in the works and will most likely land with the next cumulative update.

Full fix coming with next cumulative update

And second of all, there’s another known issue which causes the installation to stop at 99% and cause increased CPU and disk usage. Microsoft says this happens on devices that were reset using the Reset this PC option after installing cumulative update KB4054022.

In this case, the workaround is a little bit more complex and is detailed below (keep in mind that it uses c:\temp as the default path and x64 as default architecture, so adjust these accordingly):

1. Download the appropriate version of KB4054022 for your device architecture from the Microsoft Update Catalog to c:\temp. Then run the commands in the steps below from the administrative command prompt.
2. Expand the .msu file that you downloaded in step 1.
mkdir c:\temp
expand -f:* windows10.0-kb4054022-x64.msu c:\temp
3. End the existing Trusted Installer processes and install KB4054022 using the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool.
taskkill /f /im tiworker.exe
taskkill /f /im trustedinstaller.exe
dism /online /add-package /packagepath:c:\temp\Windows10.0-KB4054022-x64.cab
4. (Optional) Delete the CBS logs from the Windows Logs directory.
del /f %windir%\logs\cbs\*.log
Both issues should be fixed with the next cumulative update for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, though timing specifics are not yet available.
