First builds for the Fast ring to ship as soon as today

Development of the next Windows 10 update codenamed Redstone 4 has already started, but Microsoft only released preview builds as part of the Skip Ahead channel that launched with limited seats.

But now that we’re only a week away from the moment when Microsoft is projected to give the go-ahead of the Fall Creators Update (Redstone 3), so development is complete, the software giant is planning to accelerate work on the Redstone 4 to the typical pace for a new Windows update.

First builds won’t include breaking changes

The company announced in a post that insiders in the Fast ring would start getting Windows 10 Redstone 4 preview builds as soon as today, recommending devs working with Windows Mixed Reality headsets to update settings before the first build is shipped.

“For those of you developing VR experiences for the new Windows Mixed Reality immersive headsets, we have an important message: if you stay in the Windows Insider Fast ring, beginning October 10, 2017 you may begin to receive RS4 builds, which will not be the most stable builds for mixed reality development,” Microsoft announced a few hours ago.

“To continue mixed reality development uninterrupted, please switch your Insider settings to receive ‘just fixes, apps, and drivers’ without getting a new Windows build from the ‘Windows Insider Release Preview’ ring.”

Windows 10 Redstone 4 is projected to land in the spring of 2018, and just like it happened with the previous OS updates, with insiders to be the first to try out all the new features. And yet, insiders should be aware that new features won’t be part of the very first releases, as Microsoft is still in the phase where it paves the way for bigger changes.

Also, the first builds could come with bugs and issues affecting system performance and reliability, and this is why it’s important to avoid installing them on productivity machines.
