14 DAY TRIAL // Today, June 30, 2016, Arne Exton has released a new build of his MeX GNU/Linux distribution, based on the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system.
Shipping with the Cinnamon 3.0.5 desktop environment (Cinnamon 3.0.6 is now the latest version available) and borrowing some of the technologies from the Debian GNU/Linux 8.5 "Jessie" repositories, MeX Build 160630 is now available for download powered by the Linux 4.6 kernel.
Previous MeX builds were based on the popular Linux Mint distribution, which, in turn, is based on Ubuntu, but it looks like Arne Exton decided to rebase yet another of his GNU/Linux operating systems on a combination of Debian GNU/Linux 8.5 "Jessie" and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS technologies.
"Mex Linux is no longer based on Linux Mint. MeX build 160630 is based only on Debian 8.5 and Ubuntu 16.04," says Arne Exton in today's announcement. "I have replaced the original kernel with “my” special kernel 4.6.0-7-exton. All packages in MeX Linux have been upgraded to the latest version by 160630."

Taking a look under the hood of MeX Build 160630, we can notice that it is now possible to run the distribution directly from RAM, but only on PCs that have at least 2GB of system memory available. This will allow you to eject the bootable medium, being either a DVD or USB flash drive, and use the OS from RAM.
On the other hand, it looks like the MeX Linux ISO image has increased a little, and its size is now at approximately 960 MB. The reason for it being increased is the addition of the Google Chrome web browser, which makes it possible to watch Netflix movies. Of course, all the included packages have been updated to their latest available as of June 30, 2016.
