Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain owners across PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 are starting to receive access to the Metal Gear Online 3 multiplayer experience. The servers are operational but actual matches aren't available in some regions just yet. Fortunately, you can enter freeplay mode and try out the weapons.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain made its debut across PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 at the beginning of September. Since then, millions of franchise fans have gone through the single-player story campaign and many others have also indulged in the FOB (Forwards Operating Base) competitive online experience.

Metal Gear Online 3 has begun to roll out on consoles

However, today, October 6, the full-fledged Metal Gear Online 3 multiplayer mode goes live as a free add-on for The Phantom Pain.

First up, before indulging in the online experience, owners of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain need to download the latest game update, which adds support for the multiplayer mode as well as a few other things. What's more, they must also download the MGO Game Data 1.0 add-on from the PlayStation Store or Xbox Marketplace. It's a free DLC that just includes the necessary files for the online experience.

Konami confirms on the official Twitter that the servers for the multiplayer mode are live across all consoles but that matches might not be available in all the regions of the globe. As such, those who can't compete with others will have to keep on checking back to see when exactly they'll be allowed online.

Players can already try out the special freeplay mode in order to experiment with the weapons.

Bear in mind that Metal Gear Online 3 goes live today, October 6, only on consoles. Owners of The Phantom Pain on PC will have to wait until January 2016 to get to enjoy the competitive multiplayer experience.
