14 DAY TRIAL // You know how guys and gals a tad challenged in the dexterity department sometimes drop things down the drain? Things like wedding rings, bracelets, maybe watches or money?
Well, three entrepreneurs in New York thought it a good idea to go looking for such lost treasures in sewers under the city's streets. Except law enforcement officers learned of their plan and arrested them.
The men dived into the sewers fully equipped
It was on Wednesday that the three treasure hunters, identified as Marquis Evans, 21, Damien Nieves, 35, and David Hannibal, 45, were discovered exploring New York City sewers in the hope to find lost valuables.
They had metal detectors with them, which they hoped would lead them to precious items buried deep in waste. Apparently, the treasure hunt only lasted for about four hours before authorities found them, handcuffed them and charged them with trespassing and reckless endangerment.
“God knows what they were looking for, and damn sure I wouldn't be crawling through the sewers of New York,” police commissioner said in an interview, as cited by CBS Local.
It is understood that the men didn't have much trouble getting into sewers under the city because one of them, Marquis Evans, works for the Department of Environmental Protection. Thus, he simply popped open a manhole for himself and his buddies.
It is unclear whether the men were looking for something in particular, maybe riches they heard somebody mention had been hidden in waste for safe keeping, or if perhaps they just hoped they would strike gold. Literally.
Whatever their motivation, the plan failed
In case anyone was wondering, the men's metal detectors failed them on this quest. They didn't find anything, not even one golden earring to make up for the trouble.
Law enforcement officers say there's nothing they can do to stop people from crawling into sewers looking for lost valuables. They can only arrest those unlucky to get caught and file charges against them.
