Back in August, Chinese smartphone maker Meizu announced a re-branding of its identity, which involved unveiling a new logo and announcing a new line of high-end devices.

Well, the first smartphone from this new family has arrived this week, in the form of the metal-clad Meizu Pro 5, reports Giz China. As you can see, the device maker has dropped the “MX” naming convention, opting for a cleaner nomenclature.

The phone makes a debut into the wild with a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) and 2.5D curved glass. Samsung’s Exynos 7420 chipset has found a home under the hood of this new device, which means that the Korean tech giant is starting to become a palpable presence in the silicon market.

Meizu Pro 5 can compete with the Galaxy S6, performance-wise

The same SoC powers Samsung’s recent flagships, like the Galaxy S6, Galaxy Note5 and Galaxy S6 edge+, and does a great job at it.

In the photography department, the Pro 5 relies on a 21MP camera with Sony IMX230 sensor, which measures 1/2.4 inches in size. Selfie shooting is achieved via the 5MP frontal snapper.

Meizu will throw in either 3GB or 4GB of RAM plus 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, respectively. Anyhow, in case you need more of that, you can expand what’s being offered from the get-go via the microSD card slot, unlike the Galaxy S6 which doesn’t offer this feature.

The new Pro 5 model takes advantage of the company’s own mCharge which is a sort of fast charging technology that will allow you to juice up your device from 0 to 65% in just 30 minutes. It also has a USB Type-C port.

Meizu has pre-installed Android 5.1 Lollipop with Flyme 5 on top on the new device. Hopefully, the smartphone will be eligible to receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update at some point in the future, but the company didn’t say anything about that at launch.

The Chinese company announced it would make the phone available for purchase starting October 12. The 32GB/3GB of RAM model will be sold for approximately $439 / €394, while the 64GB/4GB of RAM version will take $490 / €440 out of your pockets.
