As anticipated, Meizu hosted a media event today during which we saw the advent of the M2 phone. The handset sells for under $100 / €90, thus catering to the needs of budget consumers or the vast majority of mobile users.

The Meizu M2 will go on to compete with offerings such as the Xiaomi Redmi 2 and the Lenovo K3, among other models. Still, as we will discover in what follows, the smartphone does offer a few advantages when compared to them.

The device will be sold with a 5-inch LCD display with 720p resolution and 294 ppi. Its powerhouse is a MediaTek MT6743 processor (1.3GHz Cortex A53 quad-core CPU plus Mali T720 GPU) fitted with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

Luckily, Meizu is offering a microSD card slot allowing for memory expansion up to 128GB. In the photo department, the phone features a 13MP f/2.0 camera plus a 5MP frontal shooter.

Meizu's M2 is one of the cheapest phones with Android 5.1

The handset is sustained by a 2,450 mAh battery and will ship out in white, pink or gray coloring options. Probably the most important advantage of the M2 is that it runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with the Flyme 4.5 skin on top.

The interface reveals itself to be very clean and smoothly-running. On top of that, users can root the device by virtue of a single click. This is a stock software feature that will certainly appeal to tinkerers out there.

For comparison’s sake, the Xiaomi Redmi 2 takes advantage of a 4.7-inch display with 720p resolution and 312ppi. Under its bonnet lives a Snapdragon 410 (like the new Moto G) working with either 1GB or 2GB of RAM and 8GB/16GB of internal storage.

The phone also offers an 8MP/2MP camera combo and runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box.

Moving on to the Lenovo K3, this phone also offers a 5-inch display with 720p resolution (294ppi) and takes advantage of a Snapdragon 410 chipset with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (no 2GB of RAM option).

As for imaging, the device is similar to the Xiaomi Redmi 2. We also find Android 4.4.2 KitKat on board this phone.

So, as you can see, the Meizu M2 seems quite good.
