An Indiegogo campaign was launched to help out

Privacy is something we all treasure, and we strive for it even when we're on our computers, browsing the Internet, something that makes all of us vulnerable to outside prying. Our very webcams can become spying gear if we somehow end up with some type of malware on our devices. But no more. The Spyslide Webcam Cover is here, and it seeks to protect you.

Laptop users are particularly vulnerable if infected with malware because the devices feature a small webcam. But so are tablet users, although spyware for mobile devices is somewhat less frequently encountered than on Windows devices. Thankfully, the Spyslide works with both.

In the past, we've seen many people using things like post-it notes stuck to their devices in an effort to block access to the webcam unless permission is granted. Mark Zuckerberg, for instance, made us all extra paranoid last year when it was revealed that he used to stick tape over his webcam. Previously, FBI Director James Comey revealed he puts a piece of tape over his laptop's webcam as well.

Cyber espionage is widespread, and while you may not think of yourself as a worthy target, it rarely matters. So, if you're as paranoid as some of us are, the Spyslide could come in handy.

What is it?

Born in the Netherlands, this tiny piece of metal will help protect your privacy. It's extremely elegant, made out of stainless steel, layered in a matte black coating that will make it blend in with most devices. The cover is very thin, only measuring a mere 0.6 mm / 0.023 inch, so you won't have any issues closing the lid on your laptop because of it.

The coolest part about it is that it has a tiny sliding door which you can open and close at your discretion. Planning to engage in a Skype call with your friends? Open the door. Planning to just browse the Internet? Close it off and be assured that even if there's malware on your device, no one will be spying on you.

Sure, the Spyslide isn't the only such gadget on the market, but it's one of the coolest looking. Other have been known to break because they're made out of multiple parts, they're difficult to install or expensive. This one sticks to your device with a little bit of glue, and it's only a few bucks.

"That's why we designed a sleek and simple gadget that is incredibly easy to use. You can simply cover your webcam whenever you want, and slide it open whenever you need it. It is thin enough to close your laptop without removing it, and in line with the design of your device!" the developers state.

Indiegogo campaign

In fact, the developers over in the Netherlands are launching an Indiegogo campaign to help fund mass production. They're only looking to raise $5,000 in the first leg, but certainly, more will come in handy.

A $7.5 donation will get you a Spyslide of your own, while a $9.75 donation will get you a webcam cover with free shipping included. $16 will get you three Spyslide covers to share with your family and friends or to keep all to yourself for all your devices.

A donation of $300 will get you 50 Spyslide Webcam covers labeled with your personal logo, text or identity, which is a great idea for businesses looking to impress. The top donation is of $1060, and it will get you a gold Spyslide. "We are not kidding, we have actually found a local goldsmith able to create your Golden Spyslide Webcam Cover," reads the description.

So, what do we think of it? Well, it's a pretty cool thing to have if you have any worries about your personal security when using your laptop. It's extremely thin and easy to install since you simply have to peel off the protective layer and stick it over the lens. The door works easily, and despite sliding it open and close about a million times, we didn't find any difficulties. It's also elegant, especially when compared to a piece of tape or a post-it note.

So, check it out if you want and donate if you're interested in helping out because this is one gadget that will certainly come in handy as cyber attacks intensify.
