Acer unveiled on Monday the world's first tablet powered by Google's Linux-based Chrome OS operating system for Chromebooks, targeting schools and other educational institutions.

A day ahead of Apple's "Let's Take a Field Trip" educational event where a new, cheaper iPad will be unveiled, Acer announced Chromebook Tab 10, the first Chrome OS tablet, which promises to replace computers in K-12 classrooms across the globe, enhancing and expanding student learning thanks to the simplicity, speed, and features of Google's Chrome OS Linux-based operating system.

"The Acer Chromebook Tab 10 combines advances in hardware and application support to enable more meaningful learning for an even wider range of K-12 students," said James Lin, General Manager, Commercial & Detachable Notebooks, IT Products Business at Acer. “The new Acer Chromebook Tab 10 encourages students to discover new ways of understanding the world around them."

Technical specifications of the Acer Chromebook Tab 10

Featuring a tablet-standard 9.7-inch QXGA IPS touch display with a generous 2048x1536 pixels resolution, the Acer Chromebook Tab 10 tablet device weighs only 1.21 pounds (550g) and offers a compact design. The device is powered by an OP1 processor that integrates Dual-Core Cortex-A72 and Quad-Core Cortex-A53 ARM chips that aren't vulnerable to the Meltdown and Spectre security flaws.

Acer Chromebook Tab 10 also features 4GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage, a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP HD webcam in the front for video chats, 2x2 MIMO 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth 4.1 support, a USB 3.1 Type-C Gen 1 port for charging or connecting accessories, a headphone/speaker jack, a MicroSD card, a Wacom EMR stylus, and a battery that should last for at least 9 hours.

Thanks to Chrome OS, students will have quick access to Google Hangouts for chats, Google Play for installing Android apps, and Google Drive for storing files. Acer promises to bring Google’s Expeditions AR augmented reality technology to the Acer Chromebook Tab 10 with a future update, making geography, astronomy, and biology classes a lot easier. The device is priced at $329 USD in North America or €329 EUR across Europe, and it's coming this April in stores.
