HTC will probably end up using the MediaTek X10 or X20

As we were telling you yesterday, HTC is going through really tough times, with the company’s shares tumbling terribly this week and investors deeming the HTC brand outright “worthless.” And one major reason why the company is barely hanging to life at the moment is its recent One M9 flagship.

The premium phone was released back at MWC 2015 in Barcelona this March, on the same day as the Samsung Galaxy S6, which wasn’t really a smart choice on behalf of the company. The result was that the One M9 got completely overshadowed by the new, improved and redesigned Galaxy S6.

For its part, HTC didn’t manage to differentiate itself from the competition with anything significant, nor did it convince its fan base that it was absolutely necessary to upgrade from the One M8 or the One M7.

But there was another problem: the Taiwanese company chose to make use of a Snapdragon 810 processor for its One M9 handset, which, as you probably know very well by now, has been plagued by overheating issues ever since its inception.

HTC planning a MediaTek version of the One M9

However, it appears that HTC believes the One M9 might have had a different fate had it arrived with a different chipset under the hood. And according to the folks at GSM Dome, the company is actually about to test this theory pretty soon.

We’ve been hearing that the device maker is readying a “Hero” product meant to salvage the company from sinking beneath into oblivion, but rumors related to the device have pretty much died down in the last few weeks. Only to be replaced by something else.

It seems that HTC is planning to release a new One M9 version which will take advantage of MediaTek’s deca-core SoC. The exact chipset hasn’t been disclosed yet, but we’re most likely looking at an X10 or X20.

The new heatless version should make it out on the market in October and should be made available globally, not just in China as some other models currently offered by HTC.
