HTC and Xiaomi cancel future products equipped with the chip

One of the most anticipated chipsets expected to release this year, MediaTek's deca-core Helio X20, seems to be doomed to fail. File this information under rumors since MediaTek has not made any statements on the matter yet.

Just like Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chipset that was affected by overheating issues at the beginning of 2015, it appears that MediaTek has hit the same wall.

According to a new report coming from China, MediaTek's deca-core Helio X20 confronts with overheating issues, and many handset makers are worried the Taiwanese company will not be able to address these problems in time.

HTC and Xiaomi have already decided to cancel their projects related to products equipped with MediaTek Helio X20 processors.

It looks like issues with the chipset's Wi-Fi capabilities dropping randomly for no apparent issue have plagued the Helio X20 since the beginning of development.

However, MediaTek has been reportedly able to fix this problem, but once the issue was addressed, new bugs popped up.

The overheating issue that now affects the SoC is severe and many handset makers, other than HTC and Xiaomi, are already considering alternatives to Helio X20.

Mass production might be delayed

MediaTek hasn't started the mass production of Helio X20 chipset, and judging by these rumors that haven't been confirmed yet, the Taiwanese company might delay the manufacturing processor for a later date.

MediaTek was always the cheaper alternative to Qualcomm's chipsets, which puts mobile vendors in difficulty since no other solutions seem to be viable at the moment.

Any future high-end smartphones that would have included a Helio X20 chipset inside might not be packed with either Qualcomm or Samsung Exynos CPUs.

Let's hope MediaTek will manage to address these overheating issues affecting its high-end Helio X20 deca-core chipset soon since there's not much time left for handset makers to announce their 2016 lineups.

Update - MediaTek denies Helio X20 overheating issues rumors and confirmed mass production of the chipset has already starter.
