Esclapion, the maintainer of the Manjaro-LXQt community edition of the well-known, Arch Linux-based Manjaro Linux operating system, has announced today the release of Manjaro Linux LXQt "Ice" 16.05.

Manjaro Linux LXQt "Ice" 16.05 Community Edition has been released as the latest stable update of the distribution built around a highly polished LXQt desktop environment. The OS has been rebased on the long-term supported Linux 4.4.10 kernel and promises to offer users a true and modern LXQt desktop experience.

LXQt is a new desktop environment built on top of the latest Qt 5 and Openbox open-source technologies. It is considered the evolution of the GTK-based LXDE desktop environment, and while many GNU/Linux developers claimed that it's still an unfinished product, others have adopted it for their Linux kernel-based OSes.

LXQt is one of the lightest desktops available on the open source market that can be customized to look quite modern, and it is perfect for those who want to have a very fast-loading desktop or those have ancient computers with limited resources, such as under 512 RAM or an old CPU.

What's new in Manjaro Linux LXQt "Ice" 16.05 Community Edition

Release highlights of the Manjaro Linux LXQt "Ice" 16.05 Community Edition operating system include the latest version of the advanced graphical installer Calamares, along with the Manjaro CLI installer, the PulseAudio sound server with the Pavucontrol utility, as well as the new Manjaro-Tools 0.11.6 components.

Manjaro Linux LXQt "Ice" 16.05 is considered a stable release because it was based on the stable Manjaro Linux software repositories. Among the pre-installed applications, we can mention the MPV and SMPlayer video players, AbiWord word processor, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, Leafpad text editor, and GIMP image editor.

Additionally, users will find popular open-source software projects like the Mozilla Firefox and Otter web browsers, HexChat IRC client, Transmission-Qt BitTorrent client, SDDM login manager, Plymouth boot splash manager, Compton composite manager, Plank dock, Octopi graphical package manager, and LXImage image viewer.

PCManFM-Qt is the default file manager, and users will be able to listen to their favorite tracks with the Clementine music player and view PDF documents with qpdfview. At the same time, the 64-bit flavor is multilib enabled and includes non-free drivers.
