Mayor Joan Faus Vitoria of Ador, Spain, cares deeply about the wellbeing of his subjects, there is no questioning it. Not when, under his rule, the town implemented the country's first ever mandatory nap time.

That's right, a new law instituted by this Spanish mayor stipulates that, each day between the hours 2 and 5 p.m., all residents of the town of Ador must remain perfectly silent or risk being reprimanded.

No, people are not required by law to nap

The wacky law instituted by Joan Faus Vitoria doesn't say that folks in Ador must necessarily nap each day between 2 and 5 p.m., whether they like it or not, or risk getting arrested or fined.

It does, however, instruct people to be on their best behavior and not make any noise during the siesta hours. Shops, restaurants and whatnot must close, and children are supposed to remain indoors to make sure they don't disturb anybody while playing on the streets.

“Everything closes between 2pm and 5pm. Bars, shops, the swimming pool, everything,” a town hall spokesperson told the press in an interview, as cited by The Local.

“Children should stay indoors between 2pm and 5pm so that they do not go outside and play with balls and disturb older people,” the spokesperson further detailed Joan Faus Vitoria's law.

The Spanish mayor explains that, when he first came up with the idea to institute this law, he merely wanted to set up an official afternoon nap time so that the residents of the town of Ador would be well rested. People are not compelled to sleep, but they must remain quiet.

This bizarre law actually makes sense

Of the folks living in this town in Spain, many are involved in agriculture and so spend most of their days out on fields. Since the sun shines especially bright at midday, it makes sense to see to it that these people can rest in the shade when the heat gets too much to handle.

Besides, several studies carried out over the years have shown that afternoon naps work wonders for the brain and even benefit the body's immune system.
