The MAME open-source emulator program that makes it possible to play a lot of classic arcade games and emulates a large number of old computers, such as the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, GameBoy, and Atari 2600, received a major update.

MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) 0.180 is here as the most advanced build of the open source software, bringing with it lots of exciting new features. For starters, there's now support for booting to the RISC OS desktop on an emulated Acorn Archimedes machine thanks to the latest ARM CPU core improvements, which also allow for Aristocrat Mark 5 gambling machines to boot and run in demonstration mode.

Moreover, MAME 0.180 finally reverse-engineered Atari Space Lords' protection, making the space combat game playable. NBA Jam Extreme and Batman Forever games are now playable with sound thanks to the emulation of the Acclaim RAX sound board. Lots of improvements landed for the Magnet System emulation too, and some long-standing graphical issues were fixed for Altered Beast and The Lost Castle in Darkmist.

MAME 0.180 includes notable improvements in computer emulation

MAME 0.180 also promises some notable improvements in computer emulation, starting with support for IC Card (PCMCIA SRAM) storage on the FM Towns, significantly better LSI Octopus emulation, modernized Mac 128/512/Plus drivers, serial port support for the Apple IIgs driver, along with better colors in high-resolution mode for the DEC Rainbow 100 microcomputer.

Last but not least, MAME 0.180 brings support for new systems, including RC De Go (Go By RC outside Japan), 286-based versions of the Intel iSBC vintage single-board computer, newly dumped versions of the Forgotten Worlds, 1945k III, Vendetta, and Sol Divide games, bootlegs of the Ozma Wars, Blue Shark, and Pole Position II games, the Italian release of the Mustache Boy game, and more Mephisto and Fidelity chess computers.
