Stanislav Hoferek, the developer of the Lubuntu-based Greenie Linux distribution designed to run on older PCs from ten years ago, was proud to announce the release of Greenie 16.04, which ships in two editions: Desktop and Lite.

Based on the Lubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenia Xerus) operating system, Greenie 16.04 inherits all of its internals, including the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel, as well as the lightweight LXDE desktop environment. Both Desktop and Lite versions of Greenie 16.04 come with support for Slovak and Czech languages and many useful tools.

The OS includes programs for burning ISO files, a calculator for MD5 checksums, a utility for creating Live USB disks, tools for basic PC diagnostics and backups, as well as more complex applications like the LibreOffice office suite, GIMP image editor, and Wine for running all sorts of Windows apps and games.

A distro designed for e-book readers and authors with old PCs

The difference between Greenie 16.04 Desktop and Lite editions is that the latter is a rather basic version of the former, shipping with only a few of the mentioned applications, but it can be easily extended with additional software if the user wants to install them.

"There are two versions. 'Lite' is a useful system for everyday use with only the most important packages, while 'Desktop' have a lot of useful applications," said Stanislav Hoferek in the release announcement. "Greenie is based on Lubuntu, so it works fast even on older hardware."

You can download both Greenie 16.04 Desktop and Lite Live ISO images right now from our website if you want to take this distro for a quick test drive or even install it on your personal computer as a daily drive. The operating system is fully compatible with the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS repositories.
