LXQt is in development, and it's not part of this milestone

After having the pleasure of announcing the official release of the Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) Alpha 2 milestone, Simon Quigley, who maintains the official Lubuntu flavor, has also informed us about the availability of Lubuntu 16.10 Alpha 2.

Lubuntu 16.10 Alpha 2 is now ready for public testing, but you shouldn't get your hopes high because there aren't any major changes. After all, this is an Alpha quality release, which means that it brings only core components updates and many bug fixes.

The second Alpha build towards Lubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) remains powered by the same kernel packages used in the stable Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, and it looks like Lubuntu still hasn't switched to the LXQt desktop environment.

"Lubuntu Yakkety Yak Alpha 2 (soon to be 16.10) has been released! We have a couple papercuts listed in the release notes, so please take a look. A big thanks to Brendan Perrine and Nio Wiklund for helping us test this release," reads today's announcement.

Known issues for Lubuntu 16.10 Alpha 2

If you're brave enough to take the Alpha 2 of Lubuntu 16.10 for a test drive, you should be aware of the fact that the "License" button from the "Help -> About Gnumeric" menu entry doesn't work for the Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, and that the Software Properties GTK tool might not recognize your computer's CPU correctly or at all.

Moreover, the mouse cursor will disappear after coming back from screen lock state (screensaver or timeout), you'll only be able to change the first desktop name when attempting to modify multiple ones, and there's an issue with the run dialog making it pop up only on the workspace where the Preferences dialog is.

Lubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) Alpha 2 is distributed as Alternate and Desktop ISO images for both 64-bit (amd64) and 32-bit (i386) hardware architectures, and you can download them right now via our website. The next milestone, Lubuntu 16.10 Beta 1, will be released on August 25, 2016.
