Concept imagines Fluent Design for file associations

Microsoft is very keen on making Fluent Design available across the entire operating system, but it’s no secret that things are advancing rather slowly, or at least much slower than users expected them to develop after the official announcement.

In the last few months, I’ve seen a plethora of concepts imagining Fluent Design implemented in various areas of Windows 10, but few of them focused on those little things that nobody cares about, but which are extremely important for the overall experience with the operating system.

The File Association dialog, which allows users to configure an installed application to handle certain file extensions, is getting a more modern look thanks to this concept, including the super-popular acrylic effect that’s already available in Windows 10 and core apps.

A search box? Yes, please

The concept was published by reddit user Centontimu, and in addition to the visual makeover, it also comes with some new features that would certainly come in handy to users. For instance, the search bar at the top of the dialog is something that should’ve been there from the very beginning, but which for some reason Microsoft still doesn’t seem to be very keen on implementing.

Of course, there are also details that need more refinements, such as the spacing between the Firefox icon and the checkbox below, but these are the little things that a company the size of Microsoft should be able to easily take care of should it want to implement this design.

If you do like this concept and want to see it happen in Windows 10, you can vote for it in the Feedback Hub. This is the main feedback platform for Windows 10 and which Microsoft promises it has in mind when building new features, so the bigger the number of votes, the greater the chances to see the concept at least being used as the foundation of a visual overhaul for the File Association UI.
