14 DAY TRIAL // Atari is launching a new game console in late Spring 2018, and they've recently shared some information for the community to help them achieve this goal, including its design, prices, and components used.
Ataribox is the name of the gaming console, which will come pre-loaded with dozens of games and powered by a Linux-based operating system optimized by Atari to consume less CPU and RAM usage, as well as to allow users to customize the OS as they see fit to further increase the performance of the device for their needs.
"It'll run Linux, with a customized, easy-to-use user interface," said Atari. "Linux lets us be more open; you can access & customise the OS, & you can access games you've bought from other content platforms (if compatible with the OS and HW). There will be tons of classic Atari retro games pre-loaded, & current titles from a range of studios."
Powered by AMD Radeon graphics technologies
Under the hood, Ataribox is powered by an AMD processor and uses recent AMD Radeon graphics technologies to offer users the best possible gaming experience, yet you'll also be able to use the console as a PC for the big screen or a TV set-top box for streaming video and audio, browsing the Web, connecting with friends on social media, run apps, and more.
Atari will soon launch a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for Ataribox, which shouldn't cost more than $299 USD, but starting price could be $249 USD, according to the company. As you can see from the photo gallery below, there will be a Wood Edition of Ataribox, which is made of real wood, and the design is influenced by the Atari 2600 home video game console of the 70's.
