We have reported earlier today, June 7, 2016, that the Beta release of the upcoming Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" operating system was launched with the usual Cinnamon and MATE editions.

We’ve already shown you what the Linux Mint 18 Beta Cinnamon Edition looks like and what it contains under the hood, so the time has come for us to tell you everything we know so far about the Linux Mint 18 Beta MATE Edition, which is built around the latest MATE 1.14.1 desktop environment.

Just like the Cinnamon flavor, the Linux Mint 18 Beta MATE Edition is based on the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, which means that it is powered by the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel and contains most of its core components.

However, Linux Mint 18 Beta MATE Edition ships with its own collection of open source software applications, among which we can mention Mozilla Firefox 46.0, Mozilla Thunderbird 38.7.2, Pidgin 2.10.12 IM client, Banshee 2.6.2, LibreOffice 5.1.2, GIMP 2.8.16, Transmission 2.84, HexChat 2.10.2, and Synaptic Package Manger 0.83.

In-house built applications like the Pix 1.0.1 image viewer and organizer (gThumb fork), Xplayer (Videos) 1.0.5 video player (Totem fork), Xed 1.0.5 text editor (Gedit fork), Xreader 1.0.6 PDF viewer (Evince fork), and Xviewer 1.0.3 image viewer (GPicView fork) are also installed by default.

The 64-bit and 32-bit Live ISO images of the Linux Mint 18 Beta MATE Edition operating system are available for download right now via our website. You can install them right now on your personal computer, but please try to keep in mind that some known issues are still present (they will be resolved until the final release).
